Fast scales don’t come from pushing your fingers harder. They come from learning how to control movement and timing.
In this lesson segment from his course On Scales, classical guitarist Vladimir Gorbach shares the foundation of his scale practice routine. Instead of chasing speed immediately, he begins at a slow tempo with a metronome, focusing on precise finger planting, releasing tension between notes, and coordinating each movement of the right hand.
As the hands learn this relaxed coordination, speed develops naturally. Gorbach then gradually increases tempo, introduces multiple notes per beat, and expands the exercise into full scale patterns.
It’s a methodical approach that helps guitarists build speed without stiffness or unnecessary tension.
