Prelude Op. 28 No. 15 in D-flat Major "Raindrop"

By

Frédéric Chopin

Chopin's Prelude Op. 28 No. 15 in D-flat Major, known famously as the "Raindrop" Prelude, is one of Chopin's most emotionally tender pieces for solo piano. It opens with a delicate theme in the right hand, layered over a single repeated Ab ostinato in the left hand. It soon leads into a darker, mournful B section, still continuing the motific idea of a repeated note, then transitioning back to the pleasant A section at the end. It is believed that this prelude is inspired by an event in which Chopin believed his long-time lover George Sand and her son Maurice to be dead in a rainstorm, only to realize they were safe in the end.
