Der Wanderer "Ich komme vom Gebirge her"

By

Franz Schubert

Schubert's "Der Wanderer," D. 489, is a lied composed in 1816, set to a poem by Georg Philipp Schmidt von Lübeck. The song reflects the wanderer's sense of alienation and perpetual searching, with evocative descriptions of cold sunlight, withered blossoms, and a haunting refrain of "where?" A shift to E major represents a brief hope for a beloved land where roses bloom and friends stroll, but the piece ultimately returns to the minor key, concluding with the melancholic revelation that happiness exists only "where you are not." This poignant exploration of longing and displacement is a hallmark of Schubert's lieder.
