Die Forelle

By

Franz Schubert

Die Forelle is a well-known lied composed by Franz Schubert in early 1817. The text is derived from a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, published in 1783. The poem narrates the story of a trout being caught by a fisherman, but Schubert chose to omit the final moralistic stanza, which advised young women to beware of deceptive men. The omission of this stanza allowed the song to focus purely on the trout's struggle, making it suitable for both male and female singers.
